Name: Kristen Borst

Title: Marketing Coordinator

Firm: William R. Nash, Inc.

SMPS Chapter: South Florida

Why did you join SMPS? Our Chief Financial Officer, Michele Snow, suggested it. She is a current board member (President) for CMFA (Construction Management Financial Association) and thought it would be a great way for me to meet colleagues, network, and gain knowledge in the Marketing field.

What is the most important thing you’ve gained from joining SMPS?
I am a new member, but I will say my first meet and greet back in August opened my eyes to the endless possibilities at SMPS. I felt welcomed instantly and the sense of camaraderie was refreshing and exciting.

How did you get into the A/E/C industry?
I would say I am fairly new to the industry. I have been working at my family’s business, William R. Nash, Inc. for 7 years full time. We are a Mechanical and Plumbing Contractor with Healthcare being our specialty. I had been in the Accounts Payable Department up until 2 years ago when I asked to take on a more creative role. I graduated from FAU with a B.A. in English and am very familiar with digital media software. It made sense that since we did not have a Marketing department that I would take on that role and really focus on amping up our social media presence and Marketing in general. Thankfully, my request was happily accepted.

What excites you about your work and the contribution you make?
It’s been a learning process from day one but at the same time extremely rewarding.  What excites me is when I get to see a project that I’ve thought up and spent hours behind the computer on- come to fruition. Whether it’s a Prezi for a prospective job or our company brochure, and/or newsletter. It’s an exceptional feeling especially when we are awarded the job and/or close the deal!

What is one thing that might surprise people to know about you?
I am a twin and we were born on New Year’s Day. She has identical twin daughters too; along with a new baby girl. And yes, we still confuse people often. Even though we are fraternal. She works at our family company as well. I’m also a mother but only to one baby girl.

If you could learn anything what would it be?
I would love to learn Contemporary Dance. There’s something about the emotion and commitment shown by the dancers as they tell a story through song and movement.

What is the last book (or newspaper, magazine) you read?
The last book I read was Chasing Daylight by Eugene O’Kelly.

What is your favorite book or movie and why?
My favorite book, which was later turned into a movie, is…The Notebook by Nicholas Sparks. The young love/romance aspect of the story line is not the only reason why The Notebook means so much to me. The book/movie expresses what it means to be true to ones self even when it’s not the most favorable choice. Many people go through life feeling unfulfilled because it would be too difficult to step outside of what is viewed the ‘norm’ or what is expected of them. We see the consequence of that decision through Allie’s mother; who chose what she thought was the easier path. I believe everyone has their “Noah/Allie” moment in life and you can either take the leap or play it safe. Another take away from The Notebook, is that when you truly believe in something or someone- miracles can happen. Whoops, there goes my sappy side again.

When you were little, who was your favorite superhero and why?
I didn’t have a specific cartoon superhero that I looked up to when I was young. I did really enjoy watching Kids Incorporated which came off Superhero-ish (especially the opening of the show). I recall looking up to the characters thinking they were so brave to be able to get on stage and sing and dance in front of a large group of people. Public speaking if you will; something I’ve struggled with my whole life.

How do you enjoy your free time?
Currently, I enjoy my free time with our 1 year old daughter, my husband, and family. When I have time for myself; I LOVE to write; specifically poetry and novels. I have a folder full of poetry. I began writing poetry when I was about 13 and still do to this day. I have two books (one children’s fiction and one young teen fiction/based on an experience in my life) that have been on the back-burner for years now. I also have written a screenplay and several short stories. I truly enjoy being creative and using my imagination. I’m also an avid Crossfitter. I’ve been doing Crossfit for close to 6 years now and it truly is my therapy. I can walk into that gym and put all of my energy and focus on my workout; I leave the gym with a completely new outlook on anything that was troubling me beforehand. Not to mention, it has put me in the best shape of my life! I also love to bake and cook. I had a small cupcake business a couple years back called “La Belle Cupcake.” It was out of my kitchen but was pretty successful!
