Name: Jesse Lockwood

Title: Marketing Manager

Firm: Arquitectonica

SMPS Chapter: South Florida

Why did you join SMPS?

I joined SMPS at the insistence of my first boss, Kim Sousa. She was heavily involved in the Boston chapter and wanted all of us in the marketing department to have the same opportunities that she gained from her involvement. Thanks, Kim!

What is the most important thing you’ve gained from joining SMPS?

Networking. Joining a committee (and now a Board) has been a great way to meet people. I have retained friends from my time in the Boston Chapter and have made new friends here in South Florida.

Additionally, resources such as MySMPS and the myriad of other educational tools made available to us are an excellent source of information for any topic you may be interested in. Odds are, if you run into some ridiculously challenging question in a RFP, someone else has as well and can help.

How did you get into the A/E/C industry?
I knew nothing about marketing for professional services prior to my first job in the A/E/C industry. I had wanted to work in product packaging design/marketing. My college job board had an ad for a marketing assistant position at a MEP firm. Fortunately they took a chance on me and I’ve stayed in the A/E/C industry ever since.

What excites you about your work and the contribution you make?
I enjoy chasing opportunities. It’s thrilling to watch them run down the line from early lead, to concrete lead, through the RFP process and into the interview stage. Winning a project after putting extensive time into a proposal is a rush.

What is one thing that might surprise people to know about you?
I became a vegetarian two years ago.

If you could learn anything what would it be?
Spanish! I took Spanish through college and planned on continuing the learning process but never did. Si usted vive en Miami, usted debe saber español.

What is the last book (or newspaper, magazine) you read?

Kafka on the Shore by Haruki Murakami.

What is your favorite book or movie and why?
I have a few – The Secret History by Donna Tartt is my recent favorite. Ishmael by Daniel Quinn, 11/22/63 by King and A Heart Blown Open by Jun Po Denis Kelly Roshi are a few others.

When you were little, who was your favorite superhero and why?

Spider Man. I was obsessed with collecting Marvel Masterpiece cards as a kid. I ended up finding a super rare Spiderman vs. Venom hologram card and it was a life-changer. I was hooked on Spiderman after that. Is that a dorky enough answer?

How do you enjoy your free time?

Traveling, eating, reading and drinking wine. Preferably all at the same time.

I have two dogs and two cats that keep me pretty busy as well.
