Name: Carolina Correa

Title: Business Development Coordinator

Firm: Lemartec

SMPS Chapter: South Florida

Why did you join SMPS? To have the opportunity to interact more closely with other Marketing and Sales professionals as it became evident to me that I wanted to expand my career within the A/E/C industry.

What is the most important thing you’ve gained from joining SMPS?
Knowledge – SMPS has been a key source of information throughout my journey in Business Development.  I have acquired key skills from networking to strategic planning thanks to various activities offered by SMPS.

How did you get into the A/E/C industry?
My father has been a geotechnical driller for many years. Thanks to him, I got my first job with a large construction materials testing, geotechnical and environmental company. I started as an administrative assistant, while I studied at FIU to obtain my degree in Electrical Engineering. Shortly after graduating, the opportunity to serve in BD opened up at the company. A background in engineering, the experience gained at work, and the curiosity about developing relationships gave me the confidence to go out there and start selling! I have been in the A/E/C industry ever since.

What excites you about your work and the contribution you make?
I wake up every morning thinking about the endless possibilities to help a business grow. That’s why I love Business Development. From a simple marketing campaign to a more complex client development strategy, what matters is the love that you pour into making these things happen. When passion is no longer an ingredient in your daily recipes, you better start re-planning your life!

What is one thing that might surprise people to know about you?
I am a belly dancer. It’s been a while since my last performance though!

If you could learn anything what would it be?
Chinese! – I love languages…any opportunity at learning a new one is a dream for me.

What is the last book (or newspaper, magazine) you read?
The Future of the Mind by Michio Kaku. Strongly recommend this one to those science lovers out there – this is what’s currently in the making. Very impressive.

What is your favorite book or movie and why?
I have several favorites! But narrowing down a bit, a great sales-related read: Never Eat Alone by Keith Ferrazi. It is all about the power of relationships.

When you were little, who was your favorite superhero and why?
Might be a peculiar one, but I used to admire the persistence and ingenuity of Wile E. Coyote! Even when failing a thousand times, The Coyote would persevere to get the Roadrunner.

How do you enjoy your free time?
If there’s enough of it, I love traveling to new places!  If just a couple hours, why not taking a stroll out to the beach?  Ultimately, my family is what really makes any free time very special.
