Name: Barry Aronson

Title: Owner

Firm: Atlantic Binding and Laminating, Inc.

SMPS Chapter: South Florida

Why did you join SMPS? Actually there are two reasons. First someone that is a member of the same industry organization as me, The BindRite Group, has been a member in Arizona and told me how beneficial his joining has proven. He said being a member gave him more insight into how A/E/C firms go about their marketing and allows him to adjust his “go to market” strategies. Secondly I realized we virtually do not interact with this
large segment of the Florida market when it comes to the A/E/C industries and felt our marketing needed fresh ideas and I am hoping SMPS can provide that insight!

What is the most important thing you’ve gained from joining SMPS?
While we are still new to the organization the thing I realized very quickly is the value in networking and quite frankly listening to how other firms approach each opportunity. It is amazing if you only interact with those like you business wise or competitors then you end up all looking alike. I love the fact that each time I come to a function I walk away with a fresh new idea to help our business grow. As an added plus we now can introduce Atlantic Binding and Laminating, inc. to a much more focused group of marketing professionals. We see it as a “Win Win”.

How did you get into the A/E/C industry?
We are an outsider looking in! Our goals in joining are to learn about the market strategies firms within this industry utilize and then hopefully we can re-shape our approach to business. The A/E/C segment of Florida’s economy is so vital that as an “Associate” organization we hopefully can take away valuable marketing ideas and trends to better our own Branding Strategy.

What excites you about your work and the contribution you make?
This has always been one of the easiest questions for me to answer. It is simply the pride I get in helping another company, agency or individual put their ideas into an impressive package so that they know their work will be valued. Nothing is more fun than going into a meeting and seeing our products sitting on someones desk knowing that Atlantic Binding had even a small part in that presentation or report.

What is one thing that might surprise people to know about you?
Well almost 20 years ago I left a good job with a major firm within the presentation products industry, picked up my family and moved from Pittsburgh to start Atlantic Binding and Laminating, Inc. with my wife. Nothing motivates you like a 100% pay cut and no customers! Especially with a three year old daughter. Now 20 years later my wife hasn’t fired me yet and our business has grown ten-fold from that first year and expanded to cover all of Florida and the Caribbean. And we are happy to report that three year old is now a 23 year old college grad with a full time job in her chosen field!

If you could learn anything what you it be?
This could be a novel with all the things I would like to learn. A second language would be helpful, I know that is surprising here in South Florida! I would like to become more computer software savvy and I would love to learn patience, but that ship may have sailed with me even though I continue to work on it. As for the rest of the “novel” introduce yourself and we can learn a little about each other.

What is the last book ( or newspaper, magazine ) you read?
Sadly I do not read a lot of books, but I could easily say I read or browse at least five or six magazines a week along with the daily newspaper every day. So I find myself with a wealth of informational morsels that seem to help me carry on discussions about many current topics... just don’t ask to discuss the latest John Grisham novel.

What is your favorite book or movie and why?
Hands down, Chariots of Fire. Even though I know everything that is about to happen I am still fascinated with how a group of people born into so many diverse and unique backgrounds come together and build such lasting friendships. Plus I love the scene where Sam Mussabini puts his fist through his straw hat when he realizes Harold Abrahams wins the Olympic Gold medal. Now that I think about it I may watch it again this weekend!!

When you were little, who was your favorite superhero and why?
I did not have any “Super Hero” growing up as i am of an age where television was just a new experience and in a neighborhood with 20 boys my age plus a park in my backyard our super heroes were whoever was the latest Notre Dame football star or Chicago baseball star. I think mine was Monty Stickles in football at Notre Dame and Minnie Minoso for the Chicago White Sox.

How do you enjoy your free time?
If I had any i think I would enjoy it! Joking aside I enjoy traveling with my family and now visiting our daughter in Bradenton. Only downside she always has a list for Dad and “by the way did you bring your tools and the drill”? I now know the folks at the Ace hardware by her house far too well!
